Eat, Grow, Love Tuesday, Feb 28 2012

Our little girl officially turned two on Friday, so it was only appropriate that we celebrate her second trip around the sun with a proper birthday party.  The Hurts love a theme and this year we selected one of Mattie Windsor’s favorite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

The decorations consisted of a giant caterpillar composed of homemade tissue paper pom poms, place cards with illustrations and quotes from the book (that later doubled for thank you notes), and of course Mattie Windsor’s masterpiece that she painted herself  (Four More Days . . .).  Staying true to our inspiration, we served apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges to incorporate all of the fruits on which the caterpillar dined throughout the week.  We also served pickles, Swiss cheese (in the form of a ham and cheese biscuits), and cupcakes to represent the  caterpillar’s eating extravaganza on Saturday.

And of course there was a craft project (this is project hurt … duh?!).  We gave the children green paper leaves and cotton pom poms to make their own caterpillars to take home.

Mattie Windsor thoroughly enjoyed the spotlight and a good time was had by all.  We even managed to raise a little dough for SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art) here in Winston-Salem.  Gifts are fun but experiences are even better, so we asked our friends and loved ones to make donations  to support a local museum in an effort to further encourage and inspire our little artist.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATTIE WINDSOR!!

New at Vintage Jane Wednesday, Feb 22 2012

Check out what I am taking to Vintage Jane this week.

I also made a couple of painted trays that I decoupaged with pages from an old travel book. Unfortunately, in all my excitement to take them to the store, I forgot to take pictures. I guess you will have to come see them in person!

Four More Days . . . Tuesday, Feb 21 2012

The countdown is on to Mattie Windsor’s second birthday extravaganza and every great party needs fantastic decorations to set the scene. Stay tuned for photos of the finished product. And yes, she is wearing an “American Gangster” T-shirt.

My Little Cupid Tuesday, Feb 14 2012

Valentine’s Day.  It is a day defined by romantic meals, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, and deliveries of long-stemmed roses.  And to me, it also means the return of my rubber bee stamp so that I can make more “Bee Mine” Valentines for Mattie Windsor’s classmates (see Bee Mine).

I hate to be a one trick pony but Mattie Windsor is in a new day care this year with a whole new set of friends.  Now that Mattie Windsor is a little bigger, I recruited her to help.  The child loves stickers so I got her a bunch of heart-shaped and other Valentine-themed stickers to decorate her cards as she pleased.  She had so much fun that she even felt compelled to nap with her remaining stickers and awoke with little glittery hearts all over her clothes and hair.

I completed the Valentines with the help of my trusty bee stamp and red yarn.  Today they were shared amongst a very exclusive group of two-year-olds as they dined on delectable snacks.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Project Hurt is also a Jane!

I have recently joined a cooperative of artistic ladies by becoming a vendor at Vintage Jane in downtown Kernersville, NC.  Now I have a place to sell all my projects – anything from furniture and pillows to my fabulous yard sale finds.  I figure that I am always going to find a way to sew, upholster, paint, etc., so why not actually make a little money while I am at it.  Not to mention, Jed is relieved that I have found a new creative outlet so that I will stop redoing all of the rooms in our house.

I highly recommend stopping in to see the shop.  They have a variety of beautiful and quirky items at very affordable prices.  You can also follow the Vintage Jane blog at http://youresojane.blogspot.com/.  I will be posting blogs here a few times per month as well as working at the shop on Saturdays.  I have included photos of some of the items that I have already taken to the store.  I hope to see you there!
