It was the perfect Mother’s Day. I spent the day at home with Jed and Mattie Windsor and mostly worked in the yard. Jed served me the most amazing brunch of prosciutto wrapped asparagus topped with a poached egg, pineapple and mint salad, smoked salmon with Ezekial bread, and French sparkling wine. I was a very happy mama!

For as long as I can remember, my mom has always asked for either stationary or garden gloves for her birthday and for Christmas. As a kid I often complied with her request because stationary and garden gloves typically fell within my limited budget. As an adult and mother, I now realize how incredibly pleased I feel to receive either stationary or garden gloves as a gift.
My mom enjoys writing letters but her first passion is gardening. I am also fond of sending handwritten notes and have definitely inherited her love for digging in the dirt. So when my parents came down for a visit during Labor Day weekend, I was thrilled that my mom wanted to spend a few hours working in our yard. We focused on one flower bed, and together we dug up liriope and nandina bushes as well as cut back wisteria vines. Coincidentally, my dad also spent the afternoon outside repairing a newly purchased side table for me. (I guess it is obvious that my love for projects runs in my family.)
My parents left that evening, but the next day I completed the job and was finally able to plant the herbs that I started in pots over the summer. My hope is that the plants will have plenty of time to become established in the ground before the first frost. In the meantime, Jed and I continue to enjoy delicious meals that incorporate fresh, homegrown herbs. And perhaps we are raising a little girl that will share my mother and I’s appreciation for stationary and garden gloves.

I have always dreamed of having a home with a wraparound front porch. The former owners of our house were kind enough to leave us four brand new rocking chairs, so I only felt obliged to make a couple of pillows using outdoor fabric to embellish them. I purchased the rolling cart from a yard sale for $3 and spray painted it black to add contrast and the rest of the furniture moved from Richmond. I dug up all of the ferns from our backyard and replanted them in urns and hanging baskets to bring life to the front porch. The bunting is left over from our Fourth of July festivities but I refused to take it down until after Bastille Day.In the evenings, Jed and I enjoy a cheese plate with a glass of wine and reflect on our day and target the projects that we wish to tackle next. Life is good.

and access to a great farmer’s market with affordable herbs and perennials. We have a pretty sizable yard that is mostly overgrown with Virginia creeper and poison ivy. Therefore, Jed has made it his summer mission to spread death amongst our plethora of vines and weeds. Our plan is to remove the poison ivy in time for fall so it is safe enough for me to make an attempt at landscaping. In the meantime, I claimed one small flower bed by our back deck to make presentable. I removed about a zillion iris bulbs (let me know if you would like a few) and planted some inexpensive perennials from the gigantic farmer’s market in Greensboro. For now I am keeping our tomato plants and herbs in pots to protect them from Jed and hope to create a raised bed for a kitchen garden where I can plant our herbs.
Buddha was rescued from a local antiques shop and sits upon a concrete based that we found abandoned on a curb. He greets us each day when we arrive home from work and reminds us to remain tranquil when we look around and realize the monumental task that we have taken on this summer.
