Swinging Summer Sunday, Jul 26 2015

Mattie Windsor has been longing for a tire swing.

IMG_5029

So with the help of a massive old walnut tree, Pinterest, and a very patient gentleman at Lowes, Jed and I were able to grant her wish.

IMG_5028

Because every kid needs a tire swing.

Fools in the Rain Sunday, Jul 19 2015

Matt and Kelly came up from Atlanta for a weekend visit.  After a fun-filled Saturday morning at the farmers market followed by an afternoon of local shopping, we came home to enjoy snacks and cocktails on the porch.

Even a sudden heavy downpour could not ruin our fun.

IMG_4981

The sky was bright as the rain came down and we all got wet.

IMG_4979

Nothing beats dancing in the rain…

IMG_4976

followed by soaring high in the sky.

IMG_4991

We eventually got all clean before heading out for dinner.

IMG_4994

A very special thank you to Kelly for bringing back this fabulous dress for Mattie Windsor from her recent travels abroad.

Northern Triad Farm Tour Monday, Jul 13 2015

On Sunday afternoon, Mattie Windsor and I set out for the Northern Triad Farm Tour.

Our goal was to visit four out of the five open farms (we had previously visited to Buffalo Creek Farm & Creamery in Germanton) in four hours!

Our first stop was Yellow Wolf Farm in Walkertown.  After a few wrong turns, I finally managed to navigate us there.

There was a menagerie of animals!

IMG_4854

There were pigs and baby pigs

IMG_4856

and chickens

IMG_4860-0

and ducks

IMG_4862

and goats

IMG_4866

and horses

IMG_4875

and did I mention the baby pigs?  (They were quite possibly one of the cutest things I have ever seen!)

IMG_4884

Next we were off to Plum Granny Farm in King.

We started off with a tour and peeked inside an old tobacco farm now used for garlic.  (They harvest over 20,000 bulbs of garlic  a year.)

IMG_4887

We found our way to the “Pick your own” blackberry and black raspberry patch.

IMG_4895

IMG_4893

We picked over two pounds of berries to bring home and devoured at least another pound while we were at it.

IMG_4891

IMG_4890

Mattie Windsor enjoyed a refreshing snow cone with fresh raspberry syrup

IMG_4898

while we went on a hay ride around the farm.

 IMG_4907

We even got to see a bee hive.

IMG_4905

The next stop on our journey was Truffles NC at Keep Your Fork Farm also in King.

IMG_4910

There we got to learn about truffles and meet Daisy the “truffle dog”.

IMG_4918

We even got to see and smell the truffles up close. Ooh la la!

IMG_4920

We purchased small jars of truffle honey, truffle salt, and truffle butter before heading to Minglewood Farm and Nature Preserve in Westfield.

IMG_4929

There we discovered a lush farm with endless rows of flowers and vegetables.

IMG_4930

IMG_4934

IMG_4956

IMG_4933

We met Arlo the cat and

IMG_4942

Woody the dog.

IMG_4943

We saw unusual floral varieties

IMG_4949

and enjoyed the natural perfume.

IMG_4950

It was truly a beautiful place.

IMG_4937

I simply had to purchase a few flowers before returning home

IMG_4960

and was able to make some lovely arrangements for us to enjoy!

IMG_4963

Exactly how many berries can one family eat?

Pilot Mountain Hike Saturday, Jul 4 2015

On Friday we took advantage of the three day holiday weekend to go on a family hike and picnic at Pilot Mountain.

IMG_4769

We thought we had selected a moderate 1.2 mile trail…

IMG_4757

only to discover that we had meandered onto a strenuous 2 mile trail.

IMG_4750

No worries…Pilot Mountain was no match for Mattie Windsor.

IMG_4772

She conquered every rock

IMG_4775

and tree that that got in her path!

IMG_4759

Despite the dreary weather we had a great time taking in the sights

IMG_4767

and Mattie Windsor unknowing fell victim to her first photo bomb.

IMG_4740

By the time we headed home, we were all ready for a snooze.

IMG_4780

Happy Independence Day from the Hurts!

Iron Family Wednesday, Jun 17 2015

Last Saturday we headed up the road for Jed’s half ironman distance race in Williamsburg, VA.

IMG_4623

After getting all checked in and set up for the race, we arrived at our condo where Mattie Windsor was transformed into a fancy butterfly.

IMG_4663

After a quiet evening and a good night of rest, it was race time!

IMG_4622

Jed headed out before dawn while Mattie Windsor, Lynn, and I arrived in plenty of time to make a sign and jump around in the bouncy house.  We enjoyed watching the professional athletes cross the line and learning about the amazing life stories of the other racers.  The MC of the event could not stop raving over Mattie Windsor’s red hair and blue eye and even presented her with her very own Challenge teddy bear.

And then it was time to cross the finish line with Jed!

IMG_4664

He came in 6th in his age group

IMG_4662

and 44th overall!

IMG_4595

This is one proud mom!

IMG_4602

And a very proud wife!

IMG_4599

The fun continued into the afternoon with a visit from Kathleen and Piper.

IMG_4606

Even a brief rainstorm could not keep this girl from dancing.

IMG_4624

So we went to the arcade and shot aliens in our bikinis.

IMG_4618

And then tested out our driving skills.

IMG_4621

We ended the day with an excellent meal at Prime46forty.  (A special thank you to our wee photographer.)

IMG_4646

The next morning we hit the outlets before our journey home.

IMG_4634

I am not so sure that yellow is my color but Mattie Windsor insisted on snapping a picture!

Congratulations Jed and thank you for giving us such a fantastic weekend!

2015 Kitty Hawk Vacation Album Monday, Jun 8 2015

Disclaimer: If you follow me (or Jed) on Instagram then you probably have seen all of these photos, but if you are my parents then please enjoy!

 IMG_4363

Welcome to the beach!

IMG_4361

All smiles with Jed on a perfect day for the beach (and a bike ride!)

IMG_4364

Relaxing with EZ on the deck.

IMG_4437

Check out these waves!

IMG_4403

Beautiful Beach Babe

IMG_4463

Watch out!  This girl means business.

IMG_4462

Walking with her Big B.

IMG_4374

Dance party!

IMG_4491

Jed and Dude off to conquer the ocean.

IMG_4480

Our version of taking on the waves.

IMG_4485

Even Owen joined us for the fun in the sun.

IMG_4481

Don’t you love when your bathing suit coordinates with your daughter?

IMG_4412

Obligatory Selfie

IMG_4550

A cool, windy day became an opportunity to treat ourselves to a pedicure.

IMG_4492

One last good night.

IMG_4561

And back home where nothing beats sitting in a bucket of water in the comfort of our own backyard.

Kindergarten Prep Sunday, May 17 2015

So it went kind of like this.  I was running before work on a Monday morning when I saw this sitting on the side of the road.

IMG_4101

After a quick double take, I raced home and hopped in my car to claim in for my own (actually for MW.)

IMG_4660

With a fresh paint job and some pink crystal knobs (I cannot take credit for selecting these),

IMG_4652

MW was ready to get down to business

IMG_4655

because every kid getting ready to enter kindergarten needs a proper place to work.

Mini Monet Sunday, Mar 29 2015

Every artist needs a special place to sit while they create their masterpieces.  Fortunately, Mattie Windsor has a perfect little mid century desk and chair but the white vinyl on the chair was looking rather tired.  After a search of my fabric remnants, we decided to make our own fabric to cover the seat.

IMG_3705

I gave Mattie Windsor a palette of acrylic paints and let her take it from there.

IMG_3697

She incorporated rocks to stamp the paint and add texture to her design.

IMG_3700

Once the fabric was dry, I made my contribution by reupholstering the chair seat.

IMG_3703

Even my mini Monet approves!

Mattie Windsor’s Farmer’s Market Sunday, Feb 22 2015

It is once again time to celebrate the birth of our sweet little red head.

IMG_3473

For her very important fifth birthday, we decided to transform our dining room into her very own farmer’s market.

IMG_3485

We incorporated foods from many of our favorite local haunts and raised money for the Ardmore Gateway Garden (sustainableardmore.org).

IMG_3480

The menu consisted of bread from Camino Bakery to make homemade barbecue (a special thank you to Lynn) sandwiches and pimento cheese sandwiches.

IMG_3484

We served goat cheese to be enjoyed with fresh strawberries and cherry preserves.  We also filled a bowl with apples for hungry kids on the go.

IMG_3482

The crudités included a variety of vegetables and was served with white bean dip.  We also made popcorn topped with rosemary and parmesan cheese.

IMG_3472

We displayed Mattie Windsor’s hand-painted wooden eggs and loads of fresh flowers.

IMG_3467

And last but not least, there was gelato from Cafe Gelato

IMG_3466

and birthday cake!

IMG_3468

I painted wooden signs on salvaged boards

IMG_3470

and Mattie Windsor drew pictures of the various items offered at her farmer’s market and we hung them on an old wooden ladder.

IMG_3487

In the true spirit of Project Hurt, there was a craft project.

IMG_3491

The mini artists drew on canvas totes with fabric markers

IMG_3490

to make their very own bags to carry to the farmer’s market.

IMG_3511

We had a house full of guests

IMG_3492

and some of us truly embraced the theme!

IMG_3502

Soon it was time to sing

IMG_3505

and blow out the candles!

IMG_3509

(There was no shortage of cake taste testers.)

IMG_3517

Mattie Windsor opened her gifts and we surprised her with a new bike.

IMG_3512

Happy 5th Birthday to our very special girl!

Fighting the Cold Sunday, Feb 15 2015

It is February and it is stupid cold.  On a Sunday afternoon with temperatures that prohibit us from playing outside, it is time to reminisce about warm days on the beach and make another seashell project.

IMG_3442

Luckily Mattie Windsor and I collected lots of seashells during our beach trip last summer with natural holes in them that were perfect for making a mobile.

IMG_3444

All we needed were sticks, twine, and fishing line to make this simple but sweet project.

IMG_3446

If only it was warm enough to sit out on the sleep porch to enjoy it…
